Jessica provided the following update about the team's work:
"Here at CommonGround, we have been hard at work training our new facilitators over the course of our biannual weekend retreat. Now that November has begun, we have already held a handful of successful workshops, and have many more coming up. These include work with the Spectrum Center, the Center for Educational Outreach, and the International Center, just to name a few. Our programming team and facilitators are off to a great start and look forward to new challenges ahead. "
IGR CommonGround (CG) holds monthly meetings, which serve as a time for CG community members to connect, develop as facilitators, and increase their social justice exposure. For the October Monthly Meeting, the programming team wantdd to expand facilitation knowledge of how dominant narratives in society play out in workshops.
They put together an activity where everyone was broken up into four different groups, and each group received a slip of paper with a description of a situation. The group was responsible for: finding the dominant narrative(s) in the story, discussing where they see the dominant narrative(s) playing out in their lives, coming up with counter narratives, and discussing how to address the dominant narrative(s) in a workshop. Each of the four small groups wrote their thoughts and notes on newsprint, then had time to present it to everyone at the meeting. After each of the presentations, some time was taken for comments and questions on the dominant narratives.
Pretty awesome for the first Monthly Meeting of the academic year!
