by Q Dockery, IGR Programming Team
Every month, the CommonGround Programming Team hosts a monthly training for the workshop facilitators and student coordinators. During this monthly training, workshop facilitators are:
- Given information and advice around facilitating and how they can grow and develop their skill set and knowledge for future workshops.
- Given opportunities to learn from each other through activities and discussions.
- Encouraged to share so that and newer facilitators can learn from the experience of more seasoned facilitators.
While the main focus of the monthly trainings is on facilitation, student coordinators are also always welcomed and encouraged to come to practice their own facilitation skills, as well as spend time with the CommonGround community.
This November’s monthly training included a small dialogue around how our actions sometimes don’t line up with our social justice work, passion, and ideas. For example, we may shop at a store that has low social responsibility ratings or even disregard an offensive statement made at the dinner table. The purpose of this dialogue was to help facilitators and the programming team reflect on this, as well as learn ways that we can address some of these internal conflicts that we may be having or feeling. Both workshop facilitators and student coordinators gave examples on how an individual could handle these conflicts and also mentioned how sometimes these issues can be hard to avoid. One participant shared an example regarding how financial circumstances could prevent you from buying Fair Trade items due to the higher cost of those products. Overall this was a great meeting that allowed the space for personal reflections and feedback as we prepare for the upcoming Winter Break.
CommonGround is currently recruiting a new group of facilitators and student coordinators for the Winter semester! Our final deadline for applications is Friday, December 18th at 5pm.
