Even as data shows increasing division on college campuses, experts like Stephanie D. Hicks see critical hope in a role colleges are well-positioned to fulfill—fostering dialogue and healing divides.
Speaking to The Hechinger Report as part of its reporting on the Kentucky-based Bridging the Gap program, Hicks reminded readers that young people arrive at college at a "really pivotal point in their development."
"Students are coming out of their home communities that in many ways tend to be homogeneous, and they're coming to college campuses which are a little to a lot more diverse," Hicks said. "Skills they gain in college about working across differences will stick with them and potentially help them reshape other institutions they’re part of in the future," the publication paraphrased.
