3 CREDITS | NEXT OFFERED WINTER 2026
CROSSLISTED AS: EDUC 325
The focus of this course is on developing strategies for facilitating race dialogues beyond the university community. In co-facilitation pairs and with a pre-designed 10-week curriculum, you will facilitate high school students through race dialogues. The first few weeks of the course will be entirely in the college classroom, preparing to enter the high school setting, practicing facilitation skills, and building confidence with the curriculum. Then students will spend 10 weeks meeting both as a practicum class with the instructors and meeting in a local (walking distance) high school, facilitating the students in dialogue. In our weekly seminar, students will:
- Discuss and prepare for weekly dialogue sessions
- Strengthen their own understanding of intergroup relations
- Further develop their facilitation skills and co-facilitation relationship
- Discuss the theory and practice of group observation, conflict intervention, intergroup communication, and community building
- Reflect on student experiences and learning
This course focuses on helping students develop and improve their skills as dialogue facilitators. This will be done in the context of the belief that facilitation skills can be used throughout life to create positive social change. Effective facilitators are effective social change agents. Moreover, by debriefing their actual dialogue experiences, facilitators can deepen their own learning about identity, discrimination, privilege, and social justice. Students must have some flexibility on Tuesdays for the in-person high school facilitation; tentative times are Tuesdays 1-3.
