3 CREDITS | OFFERED IN FALL | IN-PERSON | 1ST YEAR STUDENTS ONLY
What is popular culture? How does it reflect and shape how we think about ourselves and others? And [how] does talking about pop culture help us imagine social change?
This introductory course will survey sociological, social-psychological, and education theory related to intergroup relations and popular culture. We’ll explore who we are, how we’re socialized to understand ourselves and others, and how that’s reflected and shaped by popular culture: music, television/film, what we read, the ways we take care of ourselves, even the ways we dress and entertain each other. We will learn how to analyze popular culture, what place popular culture has in our lives, and how to talk about it with others in a way that helps us figure out what kind of society we want.
