This new training offers higher education faculty and staff (outside U-M) the opportunity to be trained as an intergroup dialogue facilitator and gain skills and techniques to successfully train others in intergroup dialogue facilitation.

Scope of program

The National Intergroup Dialogue Institute Facilitator Training provides the knowledge and skills to be an effective intergroup dialogue facilitator.

Column 2

You'll:

  • Strengthen your skills as an intergroup dialogue facilitator
  • Prepare to train faculty, staff, and students in intergroup dialogue facilitation
  • Build your toolkit of experiential learning activities, curriculum, facilitation strategies, and effective training practices
  • Deepen your understanding of intergroup dialogue and facilitation
     
Is the IGD Institute Facilitator Training right for you?

Participating in the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute Facilitator Training may be for you if:

  • You work in higher education
  • You are already facilitating dialogue and/or social justice education programs at your institution
  • You have previously been to the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute
  • Your institution has an established dialogue program OR has plans to implement dialogic programming in the near future
  • You or your institution is a member of the Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center (DDNRC)

Please note: This is a facilitation training that will incorporate elements of a train-the-trainers program. If you would like an introduction to intergroup dialogue and its curriculum and structure please consider applying to the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute.

Schedule

The National Intergroup Dialogue Institute Facilitator Training will take place virtually on the following dates, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm ET each day:

  • Tuesday, July 28
  • Wednesday, July 29
  • Thursday, July 30
  • Tuesday, August 11
  • Wednesday, August 12
  • Thursday, August 13

Successful completion of the facilitation training requires participants to attend all six sessions in their entirety. If you are unable to commit to all six sessions, we ask that you please consider applying to a future offering that better fits your schedule.

Column 2

Applications for the 2026 IGD Institute Facilitator Training will open on Monday, June 1 at 9:00 am ET and will close at 11:45 pm on Friday, June 26. All applicants will be notified of their application status by 5:00pm on Tuesday, June 30. (Preview the application questions before completing yours or your group's.)

*We strongly encourage you to attend as a co-facilitator pair (two people), as intergroup dialogue pedagogy heavily relies on co-facilitation. 

Step 1: Apply

Apply using the online application as an individual or co-facilitator pair for the 2026 National Intergroup Dialogue Institute Facilitator Training. Your spot is not guaranteed until you have received an acceptance email.

Step 2: Await a decision

Once applications have closed, our application committee will review all applications beginning the week of June 22. All applicants will be notified via email if their application has been accepted, if you are on the waitlist, or if your application has been denied no later than 5:00pm ET on Tuesday, June 30. If you have been accepted, you will be directed to register for the 2026 IGD Institute Facilitator Training.

Step 3: Register and pay

As part of the registration process, you will be required to complete a payment. 

By credit card: 

  • Credit card payments will be automatically processed once your registration is confirmed. 
  • A receipt will be sent to the email address on file. 

By check: 

  • An invoice will be sent to the email address provided during registration.
  • Make checks payable to the University of Michigan.
  • Checks must be received by July 21, 2026, or you may lose your spot.
Step 4: Receive confirmation of payment

Once your payment is processed, you will receive an email confirmation. You are now registered for the 2026 National Intergroup Dialogue Institute Facilitator Training!

Substitutions and cancelations

  • Cancellations must be made by Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
  • Participant substitutions must be made by Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
