The National Intergroup Dialogue Institute is an annual opportunity for higher education professionals—faculty and staff—to learn the philosophy and model of IGR for the purposes of creating dialogue programs on their home campuses.

Scope of program

The Institute provides support and skills for applying the pedagogy on home campuses.

Learn and understand intergroup dialogue pedagogy (the Michigan Model)
Engage participants in experiential learning commonly used in intergroup dialogue
Explore and strategize the development and support of academic and co-curricular dialogue programs and dialogic learning to fit your campus needs

Is the Institute right for you?

Participating in the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute may be for you if:

You work in higher education.
You are considering starting an Intergroup Dialogue program on your campus or interested in incorporating dialogic pedagogy into your work.
You are able to invest in doing their own work around social identities and power through individual reflection and group participation.
You are committed to attending all required sessions. Attendees who miss required sessions may be removed from the program.

Please note: This is not a train-the-trainer institute nor a facilitator training (though there is some discussion of how this fits in). While we will engage in interactive activities, the purpose of the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute is to demonstrate the curriculum and structure of intergroup dialogue.

Sample schedule

A sample schedule will be available in the coming months. All sessions at the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute are required for all participants. Participants should plan to block 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday - Thursday for programming.

We are reviewing applications on a rolling basis, and will close them when all 72 available seats are full—but no later than February 28, 2025. (Preview the application's questions before completing yours or your group's.)

*We strongly recommend bringing teams of four individuals from your institution, as time will be dedicated to strategizing the development and support of programs at your particular institution.

Step 1: Apply

Apply online application as an individual or institutional team of four for the 2025 National Intergroup Dialogue Institute in Ann Arbor. Your spot is not guaranteed until you have received an acceptance email.

Step 2: Await a decision

Once we have received your application, our application committee will review your application. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning in December. You will be notified via email if your application has been accepted, if you are on the waitlist, or if your application has been denied. If you have been accepted, you will be directed to register for the 2025 IGD Institute.

Step 3: Register and pay

As part of the registration process, you will be required to complete payment.

Credit card payments will be automatically processed once your registration is confirmed. A receipt will be sent to the email address on file.
If paying by check, an invoice will be sent to the email address provided during registration. Checks must be received by March 31st, 2025, or you may lose your spot.

Step 4: Receive confirmation of payment

Once your payment is processed, you will receive an email confirmation. You are now registered for the 2025 IGD Institute!

Reminders

Make checks payable to the University of Michigan.
Cancellations must be made by Friday, May 2, 2025.
Participant substitutions must be made by Friday, May 2, 2025.

Ann Arbor welcomes visitors by rail via Amtrak, bus service via Greyhound and Megabus, and by car via I-94, US-23, and M-14 freeways. It is also 30 minutes from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW).
