The National Intergroup Dialogue Institute offers higher education faculty and staff the opportunity to learn the philosophy and model of IGR, preparing them to establish dialogue programs on their own campuses.

Scope of program
The Institute provides support and skills for applying the pedagogy on home campuses.

- Learn and understand intergroup dialogue pedagogy (the Michigan Model)
- Engage participants in experiential learning commonly used in intergroup dialogue
- Explore and strategize the development and support of academic and co-curricular dialogue programs and dialogic learning to fit your campus needs
Is the Institute right for you?
Participating in the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute may be for you if:
- You work in higher education.
- You are considering starting an Intergroup Dialogue program on your campus or interested in incorporating dialogic pedagogy into your work.
- You are able to invest in doing their own work around social identities and power through individual reflection and group participation.
- You are committed to attending all required sessions. Attendees who miss required sessions may be removed from the program.
Please note: This is not a train-the-trainer institute nor a facilitator training (though there is some discussion of how this fits in). While we will engage in interactive activities, the purpose of the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute is to demonstrate the curriculum and structure of intergroup dialogue.
Sample schedule
A sample schedule will be available in the coming months. All sessions at the National Intergroup Dialogue Institute are required for all participants. Participants should plan to block 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday - Thursday for programming.

Applications will open on Tuesday, December 1, 2026.
*We strongly recommend bringing teams of four individuals from your institution, as time will be dedicated to strategizing the development and support of programs at your particular institution.
Step 1: Apply
Apply using the online application as an individual or institutional team of four for the virtual 2027 National Intergroup Dialogue Institute. Your spot is not guaranteed until you have received an acceptance email.
Step 2: Await a decision
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning in January 2027. You will be notified via email if your application has been accepted, if you are on the waitlist, or if your application has been denied. If you have been accepted, you will be directed to register for the virtual 2027 institute.
Earliest notice of acceptance will be Friday, January 15, 2027.
Step 3: Register and pay
As part of the registration process, you will be required to complete a payment.
- By credit card:
- Credit card payments will be automatically processed once your registration is confirmed.
- A receipt will be sent to the email address on file.
- By check:
- An invoice will be sent to the email address provided during registration.
- Make checks payable to the University of Michigan.
- Checks must be received by March 31, 2027, or you may lose your spot.
Step 4: Receive confirmation of payment
Once your payment is processed, you will receive an email confirmation. You are now registered for the 2026 National Intergroup Dialogue Institute!
Substitutions and cancelations: Cancellations and participant substitutions must be made by May 1, 2027.
