The Program on Intergroup Relations will offer mini-grants in 2024 to University of Michigan students completing or supporting research in the fields of intergroup relations and social justice education. The monetary awards of up to $2,000 will be available to undergraduate and graduate students, and proposals are due March 22, 2024.
To qualify, proposals must focus on this core area of work. Recipients must be IGR student colleagues, or be affiliated with IGR through enrollment in courses, CommonGround, Summer Youth Dialogues, or other programs. Additionally, funded research must result in a paper, project, or presentation that can be disseminated through IGR.
Proposals, directed to Donna Rich Kaplowitz ([email protected]), must include:
- Explanation of research project and how it relates to exploring new areas of intergroup relations or social justice education (2-3 pages)
- Details about the format you intend to showcase or disseminate your research (paper, presentation, art installation, etc…) Students will also have the opportunity to have their research considered for dissemination through IGR’s Working Paper Series if appropriate
- Resources needed to complete the project
- Budget and amount requested
- Transcript
Awardees will be notified in early April and will be expected to share their results at an IGR seminar in September 2024.
Part of the funding for this opportunity comes from the Adrienne Dessel Memorial Fund. Dr. Dessel was a former IGR associate director who was committed to extending research experiences to undergraduate and graduate students in the effort to expand knowledge in the field and develop young researchers committed to intergroup relations and social justice education. Adrienne Dessel passed away in 2018 and this research grant opportunity is dedicated to her memory.
