IGR Symposium Facilitates Conversations on Engaged Pedagogies

On Monday, October 28, 200 faculty, staff, and students packed the Michigan League Ballroom to discuss engaged pedagogies as part of IGR's 25th Anniversary Symposium "The Theory and Practice of Engaged Pedagogies: Pursuing Social Justice."

Dr. James Holloway, U-M Vice Provost for Global and Engaged Education, delivered the keynote address entitled "Engaged Learning in a Digital Age: What's In It for Students?" Following Dr. Holloway’s remarks, Dr. Crisca Bierwert, Associate Director of the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, spoke about the resources available for faculty and staff to create opportunities for engaged learning.

After the opening session, guests were invited to view research posters completed by IGR students. The group then divided into three breakout sessions to discuss theories and practicies behind engaged pedagogies in the classroom, on campus, and in communities. Dr. Denise Galarza Sepúlveda, Director of the Center for Engaged Academic Learning, concluded the day’s events, drawing on multiple themes discussed during the breakout sessions.

Roger Fisher, Co-Associate Director of IGR, said, "We are incredibly pleased at the participation level at our 25th Anniversary Symposium. There could be no better way of marking a significant IGR milestone than getting together with friends and colleagues across campus to discuss engaged pedagogies, which are the very heart of IGR's work. We'd like to thank the 200+ people who took the time to spend a day with us, learning and sharing together."
